5/21/2023 0 Comments An elegant defenceSecond - our immune system tries to detect and eliminate foreign particles, bacteria and viruses before they can move into our bodies and start reproducing. Beyond the obvious functions of skin, did you know it secretes antibacterial substances? According to Marshall Brian in his article for HowStuff those secretions are why “we don’t wake up with a layer of mold growing on our skin - most bacteria and spores that land on the skin die quickly”. There are 3 different ways that our immune system mounts its elegant defence:įirst as a barrier that prevents bacteria and viruses from getting into our bodies. "What is our immune system and how does it work?” But in order for it to be an “elegant defence” as Matt Richtel calls it, our immune system had to be more than that. So I started at the beginning, asking, I knew it had something to do with an immune system and white (or was it red?) blood cells attacking invading bacteria and viruses. Your Immune System: Agents and InfiltratorsĪs a lay person, and not a medical professional at Leamington Wellness Pharmacy I thought I had a general idea of how it all worked, but in light of the current pandemic I thought I would look into ‘how not to get sick’.

The origins of Homer and the Iliad are murky, which means the Trojan War, believed to have taken place in the 1100s B.C.E., 400 years before Homer, stands on even shakier footing. This is when all the real tragic stuff goes down, including the deaths of Achilles, Paris, Priam and Hector, plus the sack of Troy itself. The most important source material for Troy: Fall of a City, the Iliad, describes events taking place over four days in the 10th year of the siege of Troy. After eight years of naval misadventure, the army finally reached Troy and settled in for a nine-year siege. After Menelaus and his ally Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, fail to secure Helen's return through diplomacy, Menelaus turns to his brother, Agamemnon, who raises an army and a fleet to carry them across the Aegean Sea. A prince of Troy, Paris steals away Helen, the wife of Troy's ally Menelaus, king of Sparta. The basic story of the Trojan War begins with Paris, as does Troy: Fall of a City. A final page entitled ‘Aeroplane Bits(!)’ has a labelled diagram of a plane with easy to understand explanations of each word.Īs well as being informative there is a lot of humour in the text and the pictures. If you are planning a holiday that combines planes and small children I recommend this colourful, non fiction picture book to introduce the experience of flying. I am so glad that I took a chance and decided to give this book a try. My head was spinning with all of the twists and turns and I couldn’t stop listening. Wow! Newbery Award winner Lloyd Alexander called it “a fine work, literate, witty, filled with the excitement of genuine storytelling. With the publication of his first children’s book in 1987, the award-winning Redwall, Jacques’ fresh talent has received exceptional praise from reviewers in the United States and England. “I sometimes think it ironic for an ex-seaman, longshoreman, truck driver, policeman, bus driver, etc., to find success writing children’s novels,” says Brian Jacques (pronounced “Jakes”). 5/20/2023 0 Comments The great alone authorDogged by nightmares and flashbacks, the former PoW takes his rage out on his wife, Cora, to whom he is bound by a sick passion.Īs his mental health deteriorates, he keeps Cora and Leni close, perpetually moving the family from town to town, unable to hold down a job. The novel, named for a Robert Service poem from 1907, opens in 1974. So the timing couldn’t be better for blockbuster author Kristin Hannah’s latest outing, The Great Alone, about young back-to-the-landers who flee to a remote town in Alaska. Then, many disillusioned hippies dropped out of society and lived off-grid, just as many hipster Millennials do today. With a controversial President, a deeply polarized citizenry and alarming headlines about public violence flooding airwaves, 2018 is, in fact, reminiscent of the early ’70s. The political moment south of the border feels so unique, it’s easy to forget that it isn’t. 5/20/2023 0 Comments Do not say we have nothingIt's hard to find a sentence in Thien's writing that isn't quotable. The book is a robust exploration, filled with music, protests, and characters whose struggles will move you to your core. The story takes place in China, showcasing two generations of an extended family: one who lived through Mao's Cultural Revolution and another who became the students protesting in Tiananmen Square. Originally published in Canada, Do Not Say We Have Nothing came to the U.S. Thien has previously authored several books, including Dogs at the Perimeter, Certainty, and Simple Recipes - and if you don't have time to read any before the ceremony, take a moment to reflect on these Madeleine Thien quotes. Canadian author Madeleine Thien's book, Do Not Say We Have Nothing, has been short-listed for the 2016 Man Booker Prize, one of the most prestigious international awards in literature. |
